By comparing and contrasting the sugar maple tree over the 2 years of growth, it was interesting to see how the student inferences became more complex as they examined the long term data.  Students were very perceptive in thinking of reasons why the tree’s development might have differed from year to year.  After showing each year’s students the time lapse video of the sugar maple tree’s growth, students were able to make observations about the daily changes that are too slow to observe as they occur.  One student even extended their thinking to mention that it would be interesting to use the time lapse camera to take a picture of themselves each day of the school year to see how much they would change in a year!  It’s been a great 2 years of growth as my class grows in their knowledge of phenology alongside a sugar maple tree!
